Following the success of PlumpJack Estate Winery and CADE Estate Winery, Gavin Newson, Gordon Getty, and John Conover envisioned opening a third winery. In the Fall of 2011, an opportunity to round out their trio of wineries presented itself as a historic property in the Stags Leap District. This prime piece of land would be the future site of Odette Estate Winery.

“The PlumpJack Family was presented with an opportunity to purchase an exceptional vineyard from pioneering grape grower Dick Steltzner,” Conover said. “The unique terroir of this vineyard reflects our vision and commitment to estate-grown wines, allows us to produce wines from the Stags Leap District, and helps meet a growing demand for exceptional wines.”

Renowned architect Juan Carlos Fernandez was tasked to design the Stags Leap winery. Like CADE, our sister winery, we achieved LEED Gold certification—recognized in 2017—and California Certified Organic Farmers (CCOF) for the vineyards. Our small, state-of-the-art building is one of the few wineries with a living green roof. In addition, our winemaking laboratory, constructed from recycled shipping containers from China, is the only one of its kind in Napa Valley.

Odette is a fabled princess, a mistress, and a judge—symbolic of our wines, which embody its namesake’s femininity, strength, and power. The name was inspired by Shakespeare and other historical works, including Proust and Tchaikovsky’s ballet Swan Lake. Odette was also the name of a French judge from the 1976 Paris Tasting that put Napa and Stags Leap wines on the map.

In July of 2023 Andrew Haugen, who was Assistant Winemaker Odette Estate for many years is now Head Winemaker. Andrew has been part of the team that has been crafting award-winning Cabernet Sauvignon from our estate vineyard that encapsulates the inspiration for the property while simultaneously showcasing the unique properties of the Stags Leap District.
